Serving residents of North Texas and Southern Oklahoma, Life Center Specialty Hospital is led by a volunteer board of civic leaders. About our Community- Sherman, Texas

Sherman is the county seat of Grayson County, a rural county in north central Texas, with a population of approximately 115,000. The population of the city of Sherman is estimated to have grown to near 40,000.

Lake Texoma and the Red River border the county on the north. Dallas is roughly 65 miles south via US Hwy 75 or Hwy 289. There are two small airports in the county, with commercial airline services conveniently located one hour away- Dallas/Fort Worth International and Dallas Love Field.

The town was named after General Sidney Sherman; the Texas Republic cavalry officer credited with the famous slogan, Remember the Alamo! Sherman is known for its historic landmarks, particularly the C.S. Roberts House. History lovers will enjoy the Red River Historical Museum, housed in the c.1914 former Carnegie Library, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The museum features exhibits depicting the rich and colorful history of Grayson County and North Texas. Several other interesting museums and exhibits are also located in Sherman, including Perrin Air Force Museum and Frontier Village.

Sherman is proud of its historical significance, but is also a modern city with a thriving present and promising future. The Sherman Independent School District holds true to the traditions of education, it continues to keep up with and often surpass the demands placed on education as an institution. Upgrades in facilities, technology and continued dedication to academics have made the Sherman ISD one of the finest school districts. The Sherman ISD serves some 6,000 students at 10 campuses. The district includes six elementary schools (and two more under construction), an intermediate school, a middle school, a high school, and a school that houses early childhood, handicapped and alternative learning students. Parents who seek a private education in Sherman are afforded a choice of three private school systems. Grayson Christian School, with an average enrollment of 105, educates pre-K through 12th grade students. Texoma Christian School system educates an average of 335 students a year, serving pre-K through 12th grade; while St. Marys School meets the needs of approximately 155 pre-K through 6th grade students each year. Sherman is home to two colleges, the nationally acclaimed liberal arts college, Austin College and a top-notch community college, Grayson County College.

The community playhouse, Finley Cultural Center, provides top entertainment throughout the year as well as the annual Community Series, which includes the annual Sherman Symphony Pops Concert of Christmas music and carols the first weekend of December. Shopping opportunities abound in Sherman at the Midway Mall, Sherman Town Center, and downtown area.

Several large companies choose Sherman as home. MEMC Southwest, TI Semiconductors, Fisher Controls, Folgers, Starr Aircraft, and Tyson Foods.

Sherman, Texas is a phenomenal place to practice medicine. In a growth pattern that shows no sign of slowing in the near future, it is a quality area to raise a family and grow a business.

Lake Texoma

Just to the north of Sherman lies beautiful Lake Texoma. Spanning the Texas/Oklahoma border, the shoreline of the lake runs a total of 1250 miles long. This man made lake was constructed between 1939 and 1944 as a means of flood control. The dam, which is almost three miles long, holds back 89,000 surface acres of water at normal pool level. The power plant is capable of generating 70,000 kilowatts of power. It has been estimated that as much as $90 million has been saved from flood damage.

For the outdoors enthusiast, Lake Texoma offers boating of all kinds, water skiing, camping, swimming, hiking and striper fishing!
